Can it work??

#1

Post by iflybyu »

Hi,

I am looking into different options and I am wondering if inside oiler gear can be used on outside oiler cases? Would it me a matter of drilling the cases for oilling? Or drilling the heads?(not preferred) Could inside oiler cylinders be fitted with a fitting and run a line to the cylinders from the oilling lines used for original heads?

What are my options here as finding outside oiler heads is proving to be quite a challenge......

Thanks

Sorry, that was supposed to say inside oiler heads....cylinders also. Not sure of all the terminology, I am new to the panhead scene.

iflybyu,...... I'm not sure why you started a new thread on this. If you look at your first thread you will see your question has been answered once already. Yes you can modify earlier panheads to run out side oil lines. It has been done many times. You will want to send your heads to someone who has done this before. I'm sure someone here can refer you to a good shop. As Cotten pointed out in your first thread if you go this route you will be modifying increasingly rare parts and thus loosing some value as your engine will no longer be considered original. JMHO

The impatience of a new vintage bike owner is usually the cause of much grief down the road. Do it right, do it once. It is a challenge, not a race!

Sir-Rat,

I guess I am looking for options on how to use older heads on a newer bottom end without damaging the heads.

I am not sure if there are other options, but I am looking anyway. If it is possible to alter a set of repop cylinders and save the heads and cases, that would probably be the most favorable option.

What years of heads were cast with the area for the outside fitting?

Thanks

Mike!

Your original cylinders lack the oil galleries for feeding earlier heads, but nearly all reproductions will have them.
(The outside-oiler cylinders have a different fin conformity as well.)

It is your right motor case that lacks a gallery to the rear cylinder.
(The front has a welch-plug that is easily removed.)

At least it is an alteration that would not show, and somewhat reversable with a setscrew plug.

Hope this helps,

....Cotten

Thanks Alot,
