Oil Pump Check Ball Cap Screw
I purchased Cotten's Oil Pump Burnishing tool. Now I need to remove the Oil Pump Cap Screw. Are you using a impact wrench, or special tools are you guys using besides spending money on one of those Tappet Oil Screen Plug Tools by VTwin or Jim's?
Also, is it necessary to remove the oil line to get the tool onto the top of the Cap Screw? I am a little leary breaking the connection on the oil line as I fear it might break!

Re: Oil Pump Check Ball Cap Screw
Is yours a standard cap with a slot on top? I made a tool years ago out of tool steel for these. When I had to pull the cap off my Pan, it was too tight for even the homemade tool, and I had to use vise grips to break it loose.
IIRC, I had to pull an oil line to get to it.
Regards,
John

Mark!
Yes, the breather line must come off.
Little or no oil should come out of it.
On to the cap,
a common hollow-ground machinist's scraper often fits,
although you may have to lever it with another tool.
Most resort to a common "hand" impact driver, with an appropriate appliance attached: This one appears to have been cut from a broken extention. It would have served better to be longer.
Let us know how it goes,

I haven't heard the words "drag link" for some time, but I get the idea and I like it. Especially the controlled leverage part.

Re: Oil Pump Check Ball Cap Screw
I burnished the seat and will need to let the bike sit once the rains start to so see if my efforts paid off. The cap screw was really on there. I was able to free it with the tappet screw plug tool and a ratchet with socket.
I also cleaned out my tappet screen at the same time and found that I have a extra steel ball which is at the bottom of the filter screen assembly. I don't see this ball in the parts diagram as part of any tappet screen on any year? Could this possibly be a modification from the previous owner to keep oil from draining back down? I have a 59 FLH.

Re: Oil Pump Check Ball Cap Screw
Mark and JR!
By the Parts Catalog,
The ball-check screen assembly was used from late '52 to 62. With the advent of overhead-oilers, the ball-check was discarded for a simple screen and spring to hold it in place.
The book also indicates that two seals should be used!

Re: Oil Pump Check Ball Cap Screw
I do have a parts catalog along with 2 Clymer's and a Harley and none of them show the check ball. I do believe I am missing the 2 gaskets unless they are stuck down inside? How critical are these gaskets?
I have;
1. Antique Cycle Supply's "Complete Dealer's Catalog Electra Glide / Duo Glide 1958 thru 1968" pg. 10
2. Cylmer's M418 and M420
3. AMF's 1959 to 1969 Electra Glide Service Manual
Which service manual has all the parts for my 59 FLH?

I still don't see the check ball?
Page 88 of the '48-'57 Manual shows it in the top of one of these things. Naturally, it is missing from this one.
It should be the same as a clutch hub ball (7/32").
I haven't found a spring yet either.
