Oil supply and return lines
it looks like my 53 panhead has a shovelhead oil pump. my oil tank is a round, aftermarket aluminum one with 2 ports on the bottom and 1 port on the top. is it ok to use the 2 bottom ports for the supply and return line, keeping in mind that both ports will be submersed in oil? the top port is being used as a vent from the oil pump. is this ok?

Re: Oil supply and return lines
just because the opening is on the bottom, don't guarantee it will be below the oil level.
Either look in the top, or bend a wire & stick it in the hole to see if it is flush with the bottom. Sometimes one side will have a tube inside to take the return oil or even the vent
away from the feed. I know of an expensive shovel rebuild that lasted less than 3 miles
because the feed was hooked to the wrong hole.
It wouldn't make sense to have the return right next to the feed, the hot oil would just
return to the motor too soon.
