Panhead Outside Oiling

#1

Post by edpanhd »

Hey All
I have owned a 56 Pan since the mid 80's and have been thru a few ground up rebuilds.
I am currently rebuilding the top end and adding a pair of mid 60's outside oiler heads.
I am told that drilling and tapping a hole in the top of the cam cover is the best way to go for the oiling. Have found the "Y" pipe to run from the heads down to the motor base but unsure how to rout the line to the cam cover and cannot any parts to do this. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
Edpanhd

Here is a picture of what I did. '48 cases with STD outside oiler heads, knuckle cam cover.
I bought the outside oiler kit from V twin, but that won't work as they sell it. I bought a few fittings
from McMaster Carr; two sided compression fitting in stainless rated to like a million PSI, 1/8 NPT to compression and a piece of 3/16 stainless line and a tubing bender. The bends are tighter radius than the bender will bend, so I clamped the radius I wanted in the vice, then finished the bend by hand.
Works great and looks nice.

Nice work! You could also take it off the hole for the oil pressure sending unit.

Boy, that's a lot of stuff hangin' off such a small pipe, I'd worry about vibration cracking that right off at the case...mike

Stroker93!

Please don't get blind-sided by a cage from the left while you've got your head cocked down to the right to see if your gauge has broken yet.

There's no other reason to look at an oil pressure gauge on a Pan.

I had a '56 w/ later heads that oiled via the outlet on the pump for the pressure sending unit (at least I'm pretty sure that is what was in the place of the brass flare fitting in the pic). worked good.

Cotten....I like the guage on this motor,,,6 gs invested...I like to see pressure when started...the motor is a glorified shovel /pan clone..On start up got 40 psi and once running down the road will hold 20 psi...I have guages on all 3 bikes and haven't been run down yet ,,,so gonna keep the guage....Thats also the nice thing bout it bein my bike,,,I can put what ever I want on it...

Dave,

No doubt everyone has as much right to put as much useless "BLING" on their machines as they wish.
After all, useless chrome has kept the aftermarket alive for generations.

But do NOT fool yourself into thinking those numbers you quote actually mean something.
You can have high pressure with a blocked system, and low pressure with perfect flow.

The point I meant to make is that your eyes should be on the road.

If you get hurt while mesmerized by your christmas tree plumbing, we all share the statistical damage through our insurance companies, bureaucratic nazis, and bleeding heart politicians who crusade to protect ourselves from ourselves.

Why on earth are you worried that you have no pressure upon start up?
It was INDIANS that often lost their pump prime, not Harleys.
(And that was on the return, not the feed!)

Once I felt I needed a compass in my gearshift knob.

LittleAl, How long have you been running the outside oilers off the knuckle cover?
Have you ever run an oil gauge from there to make sure that you have pressure or flow?
I put a Knuckle cover on my pan a few years ago just for that purpose, but I still feed the oilers directly from the oil pump where the oil gauge is, similar to Stroker93's. I've always been a little afraid that there wouldn't be enough oil coming from the knuck cover.

Oh Sweet Cheeses.

You young fellows will learn a lot as you get older.
Someday constipation will hit you, and as as you sit on the throne please consider your oilpumps to be like your bowels:

Is that pressure you feel a result of healthy flow, or a lack of it?

I learned the lesson from my testicles quite early.
Lots of flow is good. Lots of pressure is a problem.
