Aluminum oil lines

#1

Post by Sidecar »

I was wondering if anyone used aluminum tubing for oil lines since they were good at dissipating heat ??
Does anyone know of a problem using aluminum lines to transport oil ???
I am thinking about bending some to try it.

Aluminum is very weak. Seems like vibration would cause it to fatigue and split. Myself, I wouldn't do it unless I knew others had done it before me.

The mechanic I use recommended braided lines or steel terminating in rubber at one end to allow for vibration.
I'm also toying with putting on an OEM filter I have lying around, so let me know how you go.
One other thing - if you use the filter, be sure to Loctite it well - I had one come off my rigid shovel...not something you want happening!
Cheers,

Kell,
Where is your spirit of adventure ?
Someone has to try it (to be the first one) or we'd be living in caves. :-)

65,
I'm running steel into rubber (no filter) right now. I don't like the way it looks though. I keep waiting for the hose to come off one of the fittings. I guess I'm just a little paranoid. It probably is the safest way to go, because of the vibration.
Braided would look out of place but should be the best.
I had bent my own stainless fuel line but have since discarded it. I'm going to bent a new one out of Aluminum I think.

How about some nice polished copper lines? looks good . easy to work with and a tad more pliable than Aluminium.

Haggis,

I hadn't thought about copper. That would make people wonder !!!!
I'm going to buy sticks of copper & aluminum to play with.

Not sure what years they were but H-D used aluminum oil lines on some Pans. I've had several sets over the years. I'll try to research it a little more.
