PanHeads and Oil Coolers
If you use one, what brand is it? And do they really work? The 65 Pan I just bought runs near 2 psi in 95° heat. (and that's w/ 70 weight oil!). I'm in FL so any help would be great.

Re: PanHeads and Oil Coolers
I have used Amsoil full synthetic 60w for 2 years now and my oil temp in the tank has not been above 200 deg. even in the hot summers here in Md.. Before I used Amsoil I used Rev Tech 70w and my temps would regularly rise above 215 deg. Before you install an oil cooler give Amsoil 60w a try! ps. I am not a Amsoil spoksman or salesman ,,just a satisfied customer

Re: PanHeads and Oil Coolers
I believe the name on mine is Lockhart and yes they do work very well. The operating oil temp dropped 25 to 30 degrees in central Texas weather.

Re: PanHeads and Oil Coolers
You need not worry about oil pressure; just make sure you have oil flowing by looking in the tank with bike running. Even with 2 PSI you are good to go.

Re: PanHeads and Oil Coolers
WOW!-2PSI--I been at 0-PSI for 26yrs. now!,I never used 70wt. JUST to heavy!,Maybe if the motor leaked out of every seam & cork -Then I give it a try!.Dam 2-psi,Thats GREAT!---JUST worry about your FLOW!!!-Thats where its at -NOT PSI!.?-do oil-coolers work ?--YES they do I have had some real hot days here like 98 to over 100!/& Valvoline st.60 did the job PERFECTLY!.I even let it Idle for 10-min. for a sailboat to go threw & put the bridge down.& that +s no problem!--The temp of the oil olny went up 12/degrees on my buddies fancy temp. stick.Remember these aircooled formulated oils work thier best at 190 to 215 degrees!.Fact from an oil post that I came accross while looking for ZDDP-enhancements in oils.If your temp goes to 225 degrees -you have more issues then just putting a cooler on her.I would dump the 70/& use 60--not much difference,,but the 60 will FLOW FASTER & that wicks the HEAT away with it!.REMEMBER FLOW NOT PRESSURE!.---Respectfully----Richie

Re: PanHeads and Oil Coolers
Keep in mind too cool is bad as well, you want the oil to get warm enough to drive the moisture off and send it out the breather.
Otherwise you will get the milkshake in your oil tank.

Took a ride to Angel's Camp and Jamestown last Sunday around a 280 miles RT. It was about 105 deg. My oil light never came on at a stop light. I use Valvoline Racing Oil 60wt.

Re: PanHeads and Oil Coolers
I'm hearing a lot of old motorcycles running hot. I've got a panhead and an old triumph. I use 20w50 all year round and it gets over 100 many days in the summer. The pans oil never hits 200 degrees and the triumph never gets over 170 degrees. You can imagine in the winter I'm concerned that the oil never gets hot enough to burn out moisture. I built the triumph and an experienced builder did the pan.

TINTOP----The Temp.-gages that are on the dipstick SUCK.I use a handheld heat-index detector.-(there cheap from HARBOUR-FRIGHT-$39).Then you can see where shes the hottest & take tranny temps & so on.If you used a gun as described your in the Golden-Zone I would call it.Anything from 190 to 225-is GOOD!/Flatheads have been known to exceed that sitting on a bridge waiting for it to come down.--That 10-12,min. can raise a flattie to 240+.Which Is fine as Flatheads run hotter then pans, knucks, shovels.I have been told that if a 45 or Big-twin Flathead dont get hot/Theres a problem!.Ofcourse thats on a STOCK MOTOR!.The guys that have been putting in skirt-squirters have drastically reduced engine temps. & Alot more Longevity out of the top-end!.-Just my 2----Respectfully----Richie

Hey ozwick
At the risk of hijacking this thread, did you happen to stop by the Jamestown Hotel? A buddy of mine spent two years renovating it and it turned out real nice. He's also a Harley guy.

Tintop,
I think I did within the last 2 years? If it is the same place, food was pretty good. We didn't get onto the main st. but just ate at the breakfast cafe across 108 from Jamestown Harley. From there, we went up Rawhide Rd. to Angel's Camp then back down Hiway 4 thru Copperopolis back down to Hiway 99.
