Sumping

Post by flatland »

Has anyone had any success with an alternate method of reseating the oil pump check vale seat other than burnishing ? Have tried the peening method, on the pilot valve of the old style G.E. oil circuit braekers, same set up, seat and ballbearing backed up with a spring, never did have any success. Or should I just live with the fact, that it's just the way it is with pan?

Flatland!

Please cut'n'paste oil loss after startinge the engine into the search function.

This site has the best search function ever, but the address always remains my search string: Probably my IE6 to blame!

Cotton,

When you log off, go down to the bottom of the page

See where it says Delete all Board Cookies? Click that, then you will be asked do you want to delete board cookies, click Yes....

See if that helps.

I dare not log off, George!

The last time I did, I could no longer view the forum as anything but lines of "school paper" with commas and apostrophys strewn across it.
Only by luck while scrolling around where I thought it should be, did I manage to bring up the log on page. Even when logged, I cannot view many of the catagories, such as Members Only and below that.

My home machine can view the lower catagories, but it can take minutes to open.
(It just took a minute plus to open the silly smilies on the reply page.)

Such is life today with WIN98 and a dial-up connection.

Meanwhile, I have been trying to find a way to take photos of the pumps seats through my borescope.

Doh!

Today I can no longer open topics in the "other models" section,
and the edit button for my above post disappeared.

My participation may become more limited soon, sorry!

Mr. P!

I am my own worst enemy, and ultimately I must bail myself out.
It is just my nature to resist discarding hardware that has served me so well for so many years, especially since my most valuable software will not work in modern machines.
Why trade in a Flatty for a throw-away Twinkie?

Call me stubborn, call me a Luddite or just stoopid, I just can't handle another dozen learning curves every few months.
I have never even owned a cell phone.
And the thousands+ of stored emails going back a decade are the only way I can remember and sort out my loyal customers, who are absolutely the best on the planet.

My wife's laptop with VISTA sits idle, not just because she bought herself a whole new system and un-hooked it, but because it sux. (It had no trouble with this particular site, however!)
Since the machine I am pecking this upon is now locked in 'safe mode', and I cannot reload it because both its floppy and CD drives are broken, the inevitable move on to something "modern" is looming; perhaps after the Holidays.
But for now, I never have to worry about a virus, or pay for protection!

Back to pump seats, I have a '56 on the bench with chunks out of it, but it will take a bit more patience to get a pic...

Thanks for this most valuable forum,

Mr. P!

My immediate problem is getting the focal distance right, as well as determining how much the camera will automatically lighten or darken the image depending upon the flash setting, even though the flash will never enter the pump bore.

This particular pump has three separate "voids", right where the ball should seat.
It does not look like corrosion, as everything else is not pitted.
It may have been the victim of a punch smack some time in its history, long before it arrived.

Thanks again,

Cotten,

You might want to check a auction such as Dell. Here is a link to 1 of their refurbed PC' w/Windows 7. Opening bid $.99 cents.

Folks,

I sincerely appreciate everyone's offers,
but it is my responsibility to get with the program.
*sigh*
The only real obstacle beyond my stubborness is retaining the email address that I have used for... ever almost.
And its on all of my labelling and literature.

Apparently a "subscription" will transfer it, however it seems like a monthly fee!
*gasp*
And my basic right now is rock bottom, naturally.

Back to sumping,
electronics again gets in the way, as I ran down the camera's batteries with exploratory attempts to capture the seat with my borescope.
My unsteady hands are only part of the problem, but it still seems almost possible.

Hey Cotten,

2 things....

1. How are you able to set up your bore scope for photos?

My borescope only has the focusable eyepiece and it has two adapters so I can change from a straight ahead view to a 90 degree view.

I can't afford one like we have at work, as it has a monitor and can save images to a flash drive.

But the one I got suits me just fine for what I need it for.

Just wondering how your setting up.

2. The oil pump that I took off my 58FL engine looks good, how/what is a good way just to clean the seats and have a good look again?

I thought about using toothpaste or baking soda paste and a good cleaning in the dishwasher. Followed by fresh clean oil. Tips/advice welcome. I have one of your burnishing tools in hand.

George!

So far I have only determined that I can get a fuzzy image, hand held, camera right on the eyepiece.
Next shall be fixturing, but distractions have been coming from all directions.
Your toy sounds like more fun than mine, with no focus at all. It was rescued from a hospital dumpster.

Awe cheeses, you've got one of those infernal burnishers that escaped.
Please ink the ball, and try to determine if the seat is indeed concentric with the bodies plug threads, before risking its application.

My choice of cleaning depends upon the condition, but most go through my fine bead cabinet before the seat grinding, lapping, and final burnishing, all of which demand scrupulous scrubbing afterward.
