Panhead Cylinders

#1

Post by indianut »

Someone brought me a panhead cylinder that a wrist pin cut 2 deep grooves into. I measured it as best I could and determined that it should clean up at .070. I CAREFULLY set it up on my Boring Bar to leave .005 for Honing and bored the cylinder. I watched the bore job with a flashlight and realized that .070 was going to be perfect as the deepest groove was still barely visible and would be gone after honing. When I removed the cylinder from my Kwik-Way I saw that it had bored THROUGH to the Oil Feed passage!! Why would this have happened at .070? I have taken Pan cylinders to this size before. Is it just a Freak cyl. with core shift? Has anyone seen this with a Pan cyl. at .070? Thanks

Indianut!

If the top and bottom spigots are still relatively concentric to the bore, I would not hesitate to blame Harley-Davidson.

I measured the spigots, top and bottom, and they were within .005 all the way around.
JR. No, not Ross's cyls. But I am doing a Sport Scout for Kid right now.

Indianut!

At that overbore, that's closer than relatively.

It's below the ring travel we hope?
If so, maybe you can slip a steel tube up the gallery?
It wouldn't matter if it sealed well at all.

A press-fit would distort the bore, so do it before you plate'n'hone.
