Piston Ring clearance
I have always worked down the thicknes or my piston rings with flat surface and emery cloth so they have .004" clearance in the ring grove. Every ring and piston set I have got has far less clearance then what the manual calls for. Am I one of very few thay thins the rings down to get a .004" fit in the ring groves? If the rings are instaled with the .001" to .002" fit as they come in the set can they bind or stick in the groves with heat? I am wondering if this clearance is as important now days as it was 60 years ago when the manual was made.

Oldbob!
The fat clearance was for the fat old FL rings.
Nearly all modern pistons have the thin FLH rings, modern oil rings, and sweeter clearances to go with them
Beware also that sanding on a ring removes its parkerized surface, intended to retain oil for start up!
