Preserving Carb finish.

#1

Post by George Greer »

What is a good method for cleaning, and preserving the original black finish on a Linkert M-74 carb?

I'm going to be looking at a almost complete M74, and it has been told to me that the finish is original. It is missing the carb bowl.

I may be in a position to get it, and if it is fact with the original finish, I would want to just clean it, and replace only the worn out parts.

Tips/advice? Thanks.

George!

Mineral spirits, then Simple Green, then Johnson's Paste Wax under a heatlamp.

And an enormous amount of attention of course, with nothing more abrasive than toothpicks and a toothbrush.

I got to look at the carb, and I will be posting photos of it shortly.

It looks to me like the motorcycle that it was mounted on was in some sort of accident, because of the way it is cracked around the mounting bolt holes, and I am not 100% sure but it appears that the body is cracked too.

I will be taking it with me to work and NDI/NDT the area that looks to be cracked just to make sure or not.

Most of the parts are there, minus the float bowl assembly, and the nozzle.

More to come.
