Linkert "Power" detent ball replacement

#1

Post by panhead_kicker »

Has anyone successfully replaced a Linkert's "power" needle detent ball? It appears the brass is slightly deformed to capture the ball, like it is staked. I'm all ears! <grin>

The ball is held by a pressed retainer.
Make a retainer or buy needle valve lever 27395-27 from JP.

If the original highspeed needle detente ball is rusted or stuck, it must be removed by flame-welding a piece of rod to it, and pulling, such as shown on this idle needle lift lever:
BALLR&R.jpg
After the hole is cleaned, the casting prepped or painted, and a new, greased spring is inserted, a fresh ball is then pressed into the hole with a punch that has a dimple in the end, allowing the ball to protrude as the rim of the punch contacts the casting around it.
A careful smack with a light mallet then stakes the ball, with the body casting resting upon a bean bag.

Its about a twenty minute operation, if you are lucky the first time.

Thanks for the tips. I had some silly notion of trying to use a drill. The ball is rusty, flat, depressed and stuck. (hhhm.. reflection..) Would it be a good assumption that the same friction ball and spring used in the choke stop, is also used here?

P_K!

It is the same 5/32" ball, but the spring is slightly shorter.

Success! I used 27405-26 spring and 27406-26 ball. Feels nice on the knurling.

Although I have no literature to support the practice,
staking the choke detente in the same manner not only saves some tedious grief whenever the carb is serviced next (especially if it is on the side of the road), but it also limits the constant spring force upon the choke assembly, which wears the chokeshaft ,and eggs out its bore within the body casting.

The spring force upon the HS needle in sturdy bronze bodies poses no problem, however the same design in potmetal Scheblers suffers enough over the decades to push the aim of the needle away from its seat!

Just for clarity Folks,

The correct HS friction spring is not listed in our Pan H-D Parts catalogs, but it is known as Schebler DL66 or Indian 102460, as shown on the right, as compared to 27405-26 on the left.

Thanks for setting that straight Cotten.
The picture you provided reminded me I had a couple of low speed levers that needed attention. Since I don't have easy access to welding equipment, I took a slightly different approach:

lever2a.JPG

This was a 20 minute job, the second time around!
