REWINDING THE COILS ON A 3-BRUSH RELAY

#1

Post by awander »

Hi guys:

i am working on a project to document and rewind the coils on 3-brush cutout relays.

Does anyone have a burned out relay that they would be willing to donate to this cause?

I think so-I am trying to document the windings-since mine was burned, I am not sure I got it correct, and I may have miscounted somewhere in between 1 and 1300. So more samples to take apart would be helpful.

Once I know what to do, i am going to attempt to rewind it on my CNC Mill, converted into a coil winder.

I sent you a PM.

Andy!

I have about four in an El Producto "Bouquet" box,
but how do I quickly determine if they are dead soldiers, or might still live?

Cotten:

From the GEN terminal, you should measure somewhere around 50 ohms to the relay frame, and a very low resistance(one the order of 0.2 ohms) to the BAT terminal.

If one or both measure open(infinite ohms) or a much lower resistance, then one or both of the windings are open or shorted.

The series winding, which should measure only about 0.2 ohms or so, is the one that is hard to measure-if it is partially shorted(due to lacquer coating on the wire either melting or chipping off with age), then it will be hard to tell with just an ohmmeter.

I think I have the coil winder on the CNC figured out-I did some test winds using some of the old fine wire from the "shunt" coil on my dead relay.

And I figured out how to take the old relay apart without damaging it....I have some magnet wire coming in soon...so I may have some good news to post in the near future.
