Voltage regulator problem

#1

Post by Metal Devil »

My voltage regulator keeps going out. I have had the Generator looked at and it tests fine according to the generator shop. I can ride for a month fine and then suddenly I am stranded with a dead battery and a toasted regulator. Just burned up fourth regulator in 12 months. When I replace the regulator and test everything it all shows to be working fine. One regulator lasted a week and another a month. Wiring is not my strong point but I am willing to be schooled! Any help would be great. Thanks

First of all, what kind of regulators are you using and what on?

I would recommend looking over the entire electrical system for a intermittent short circuit. A short can destroy the regulator in no time at all. A fuse or two in the system can keep it from happening aging if that is the problem.

Stock regulator for a 62 Pan. I have tried one from Harley, one from Drag Specialties, and two from Napa. All appear to be purchased from the same suppliers. I will go over the wiring again this weekend and check all the fuses again. Will post what I find. Thanks.
