generator gear removal

I am rebuilding my "55s generator. I have removed the pin from the gear and I am trying to remove the gear. Do I need a gear puller to get it off? Is there a specific puller that needs to be used? Thanks for the help.

Go to Home Puke and buy a cheap fauset handle puller. Will work like a charm. Bob L

I did the autozone tool loan program and got a puller from them

Tried the battery post puller last night and did not work. I think the gear has been on there a long time. Need to get a bigger puller. I am going to get one from Auto zone loan deal also. I will keep you posted.

Be careful with a generic puller that has a pointed anvil. It can spread the end of the shaft so that the gear will never come off! Factory type pullers had a blunt end with a small pip on them that centered them on the shaft but did not bear on the center hole. If you use a bearing puller behind the gear it seems to work best without damage to the gear teeth.

Got a puller from Auto Zone and it worked perfectly. It is a 3 finger puller that allows you to tighten the fingers to the gear and then easily pull it off. Best thing is it is free to borrow, good deal. Thanks for the help.
