61,
my guess is that when the points close as you kick it through the battery does not have enough capacity to energize the coil or anything else.
might try a larger one or temp up some wiring to a larger battery from a car or something and see how it does.
put a fuse in the + wire just to be safe!
welcome to the forum btw!

And a bad battery can take an armature out with it.ozwick86 wrote:Sounds like a bad battery.
The 12N-5.5a-3b battery should be replaced every spring whether it seems to take a charge or not.
They're fairly cheap and warranteed from Interstate.
A customer walked in with an identical battery from CCI, and it was dead on arrival.

I run the sealed Yuasa YZT14S battery. You have to stand it on end but you won't have any problems.

Re: 12 V itty bitty battery
I run the same battery as Mark (YTZ14S). I tried the 5.5amp battery but didn't want to replace it every year. Also, since the YTZ14S is sealed, no more acid drips to ruin paint/chrome. My first YTZ14S lasted 4 years. That includes year round riding and being cooked in the oil tank riding to work and back through the Arizona summer. When I went to buy a new YTZ14S the price had gone from $70 to $150! I found a generic equivalent of the YTZ14S for $80. Looks like they were made in the same factory, just labeled different.

Craig,
The generic, what is the name? I would like to research if it is made Japan where the Yuasa's are made.

Mark,
It's a "Battery Mart" brand. They are a large internet seller of batteries. http://www.batterymart.com
