65 Electric start issues

Post by ells_Panhead »

Hello everyone,

I have a small issue with my 65 here in Korea. I was having trouble with the electric start every time the bike got hot. In the morning or after it set for awhile the bike would crank over just fine. When it is hot, I just get a clicking sound from the relay under the battery. If I let it cool down, it starts right up. The other day I was riding back from a pig roast at the beach, I stopped for gas and it would not start. I let it cool down and still only got the clicking from the relay. I used the kicker and it started and home I went. I have jumped across the soleniod and the starter and the solenoid have worked. Is it the relay or the solenoid?

Thank you

Andy

The relay seems most suspect.

'65s had no tab on the battery tray for a relay, so yours may be placed in a spot where the pipes or oiltank overheat it.

(It is ironic that only four years before America put a man on the moon, HD still didn't know what a relay was.)
