Wiring question
Hello Everybody,
I am rewiring my '56 panhead and have a question.
There was a 12v system installed on the bike at some point with a Cycle electric model 66A generator with a A and F terminal and a regulator with DF, D+, 61 and B+ terminals.
I have been looking and some other posts on this topic and this is what i found so far:
- The DF terminal goes to the F terminal on the generator.
- The D+ terminal goes to the A terminal on the generator.
- B+ terminal goes to the swith terminal 1
- 61 terminal goes to the gen. light on the dashbord (terminal 44 on the dashbord).
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Should the other wire of the gen. light connect to the switched positive? and if so what terminal should I use (terminal 6 on the dashbord?)
In the original wiring diagram there is a green wire from the generator to terminal 2 on the switch.
Is this no longer required or should there be a other connection to switch terminal 2 ?
What is the right (or best) routing of the wires to the regulator(along with the wires to the generator and then behind the pushrods? )
Thanks for the help.

Re: Wiring question
I know nothing but here goes ...
In the original setup when the generator reaches the desired voltage a contact in the cut out relay moves removing the ground and the light goes out.
It only needs one wire to work.
My guess is not, meaning you have a real regulator and not just a cut out relay in which case you do not need a connection to terminal 2

This is true, when you turn the lights on terminal 2 is hot, this turns on the second coil in the generator producing more power to run the lights. In the original wiring diagram there is a green wire from the generator to terminal 2 on the switch.
There are two ways this can work. The cycle electric generator is replicating the Delco remy function or not.Is this no longer required or should there be a other connection to switch terminal 2 ?

Run the wires most direct route, don't let the wires touch the exhaust pipes. What is the right (or best) routing of the wires to the regulator(along with the wires to the generator and then behind the pushrods?

Re: Wiring question
Thank you for your help.
You say the gen light only needs one wire but it is isolated from the plate it sits in.
If i don't connect the second wire it won't go on?
In the original diagram the second wire is connected to terminal 6.

Re: Wiring question
I too, know little of electrons, Folks,
And it has been decades since I messed with a Bosch-style regulator, and I haven't a sportster reference manual handy.
But my feeble memory suggests that I ran the idiot light like the DuoGlide and later schematic, directly to the A terminal (the one you "flash") instead of from the regulator terminal. And I think it worked.
The other bulb socket lead goes to terminal #6 for Duos, #7 for ElectraGlides, or directly to the switch if you need.
The bulb socket must be insulated of course.
Beware Theo,
that your Bosch-style regulator may not be ideal for available choices of 'conversion' batteries.

Re: Wiring question
Thanks for your response.
I went to get a few parts at my harley dealer today and he told me the wire to the gen. Light is supposed to go to terminal 61 on the regulator.
He told me terminal 6 is the "power or +" to the gen. Light and terminal 61 makes the connection to the ground.
Once the generator produces the correct voltage the connection to ground is disconnected and the light will go out.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: Wiring question
Hello cotten,
What do you mean exactly?
It reaches terminal 6 and 44 on the dashbord, but i am not sure this is what you mean?
(Could be my lack of english).

Re: Wiring question
Theo!
One lead from the bulb socket should reach terminal #6 appropriately.
The other lead may have been manufactured to reach the generator 'A' terminal, and not a custom application such as your Bosch-style regulator.
Where have you mounted the regulator?
Does the wire from the socket reach it?

Re: Wiring question
The wire from the light won't reach the regulator.
I got the regulator next to the oil filter, so it is not an option to run the wire directly.
There for i am going to use terminal 44 on the dash to connect it.
I think i will run the wires down towards the generator and than run them behind the pushrods to reach the regulator ( perhaps the picture in the first post makes it more clear what i mean)
The lights placed in the dash are not the originals so there is also no telling where the wire went originaly and they where already cut when i got the bike.
