Proper routing for wiring

#1

Post by 1964FLDUO »

I am finishing up the wiring on my 64 and need to know the proper routing for the wires coming from the fork terminal to the dash/ignition.

Im pretty sure they just run on the left side of the neck and right up into the dash.

Good picture Bob, and as Bob's picture shows, the wiring ALWAYS went up the right side of the neck and the clip holds it in place to keep it away from the fork stops. The wiring never went on the left side. It was the same basic location on all years.

Rob, there was one exception. The 1948 panhead where it was routed under the neck lock. I’ve had talks with Bruce Linsday and nobody knows why but I think they had big problems with it and by the end of the production year it was raised to the upper location.

Bob,
Because it was the '48 is why it was done that way, like a Knucklehead, because the fork stop is at the top it had to go low. The stop location changed with the Hydra-Glide.

So it was just due to the springer? I was not aware that the knuckle was routed the same way.

How about where you route it under the tanks and to the ignition?

I always tether the front loom and the rear loom on each side of the frame but thats your call. In the four clear pictures that I have of differant years. The front loom is not tethered to the frame below the dash. Bob L

Code: Select all

Now that is really sad!! All vehicles have a right side and a left side, and where you are looking at it from does not enter the equation! That would be like holding a map sideways and claiming all the directions are now shifted 90 degrees!

What terminal should the front fender light, and spot lamps be connected to? They do not appear in the diagram.

1964FLDUO,
Several things to keep in mind here. Lots of the accessories were dealer or owner installed. But a couple things to look at.
The front fender light is normally wired to function as a parking light as well as a running light. So it is wired so that when the switch is in park position the tailight and fender light come on together and nothing else. Check terminal #25 and see if it is hot in the park position. If so that is your spot.
The spot lamps are normally connected to pick up power from the low beam side of the headlight. So they would connect to the terminal for the low beam on one side of the handlebar switch and to an unused terminal on the other, where the spots themselves would then be connected. If you want them hot all the time then you need to connect them to the green wire for the headlight switch where they work with either beam. Or to the red hot lead and you can turn them on at any time, even with the lights off!
Look in the knowledge base as there are some wiring diagrams there.

Thanks, Robbie. I also have a later 6 pole ignition switch, anyone know where the jumpers go? The wiring was all wrong before so I have nothing to follow. Right now I have it wired like a 61-64 5 pole and it isnt working right.
