1957/1963 Engine

#1

Post by CaptMike »

Just came back from talking to the most knowledgeable Pan guy I've met. He says I have a 1963 right case (plugged oil holes between the tappet blocks). I did notice the inside boss with "62" but didn't think much about it. He next asked me about the heads. Both are marked -56. The weird thing is I don't understand how the heads were being oiled. My heads do not have external oil lines.

Guess I need to go pay Google for access to the Panhead Book 'cause Inquiring minds want to know.

Cotten, any ideas on this one?

I'm always in for a good Puzzle but I'm lost on this one. I need to go back and study the Right Case closer.

CaptMike!

I'm not sure of your question.

Was the motor together?
Had it run?

And what is the "Panhead Book"?

63-65 crankcases have a fitting for the external feed, 63-65 cylinders do not have the feed hole in the right side, 63-65 heads have a fitting for the external feed. The heads need oil or they won't last long. I suppose holes could be drilled in 63-65 crankcases, cylinders, heads to convert to internal feed.

I've looked at it about 5 times today. Since my pal has been gone 32 years... I can't figure out how the motor ran with no oil in the top-end. To my knowledge this motor ran for years ('63 right case) with the '57 heads. The right case has the front cylinder oil hole drilled and plugged which looks to be factory. The rear cylinder spigot has nothing.

I'm to the point where I'm thinking I need a right side case or different heads.

The "Panhead Book" I refereed to is How to Restore Your Harley-Davidson Motorcycle

Mike,
Please answer these questions.
What year is the bike?
Does the crankcase have an external feed fitting?
Do the cylinders have feed and return holes or not?
Do the heads have external feed fittings?

Does the crankcase have an external feed fitting? Yep.
Do the cylinders have feed and return holes or not? Yep.
Do the heads have external feed fittings? Noooo.

I found a company that will drill external holes since the oil feed through the cylinders is a bad design.

CaptMike!

So all Panheads from '48 through '62 were designed bad?

You know I could answer mainly two different ways but it would be a waste of time.
