Hello, I have had my heads repaired, so I am returning to rebuilding the motor. The heads look very nice and clean now, and am wondering if they should be painted or left raw? also, what is best when refinishing the jugs and cases? Should I bead blast them, and what should they be painted with? it is a 1963 FLH. Thanks!

Your 1963 cylinders came from the factory painted "silver".
After blasting, your bare aluminum can be smoothed with abrasive nylon brushes, often marketed under the names "Adalox" or Nylox". This will help prevent fingerprints and other dirt from sticking, as well as to help remove embedded blast media.
If the interior of the cases can be coated to encapsule embedded media, and to seal porosities. The most widely used is "Glyptal".

How much cooling do you get from leaving the cases bare? Been wondering this myself.
When I did aircraft engines, we painted everything, to prevent corrosion and help seal minor oil seepage. Obviously, paint won't hold a pressurized leak.
The VHT paint I used on my cylinders claims to have ceramic particles that supposedly aid in heat transfer.
Any thoughts?

I do not believe that even powdercoating is a significant insulator.
An aircooled motor is designed to dissipate more heat than it produces;
It is only when the motor produces unusual heat that it becomes an issue, and bare metal won't help that.

For the sake of future touch-ups, I suggest any of the brand-name rattle-can offerings, such as VHT, H-D's own, or my preference: Duplicolor.
I know nothing of commercial offerings,
because I hate to paint (except with a brush), and the State has strongly discouraged me from using a gun anyway.

We worried about those who got the order of the second stanza mixed up.
Needless to say, this was long before the PC coed basic training came along.
Coincidentally, I ran across my basic issue field jacket the other day, realized it's looking a little shabby and faded, and stopped to think how many years ago that was. Scary.
