#1

Post by 61FLHPan »

I was timeing my bike with a timeing light everybody said that a lot of oil will spray out when timeing.I had a little oil spray out my concern is that I am not getting enough oil to the fly wheel .I can see the oil on the fly wheel is there a way I can check the oil flow to the crack case. THANK YOU

Dear 61FLHPan,

The big messes come from when the motor is sumped or the bike is leaning over at you.

If you just get some spit, thats a good thing!

As long as you have oil on the flywheel you're most likely OK. Check that you have good circulation back to the tank. Also you can always crack a line and see if you've got oil flowing. These motors are not supposed to have a lot of oil in the crank cases. If someone told you you'd get a lot of oil out the timing hole they probably experienced that problem with an engine that had too much oil in the cases. It is very common for the check balls in the oil pump to be worn or stuck and allow oil to sump into the cases. It should scavenge out once the motor is running but if the problem is severe enough you can end up with oil constantly by-passing and having too much in the cases. Yours sounds like it is fine.

Unless it is a stroker with a miss-timed breather hole,..

The oil spray out of the timing hole can be minimized easily.

1. Put the timing plug back in the hole loosely.
2. Start the bike and block it up level.
3. Let it run long enough to evacuate the cases.
4. Then remove the plug and strobe it.

A face shield is prudent anyway.

Strobe timing with the S&S stroker wheels is a challenge since they are thinner and harder to see, I'll try Cottens idea...Mike
