CV on my 53

#1

Post by Fast Ed 53 »

OK guys lets get this modified deal going over here. I installed a cv that I picked up on ebay, came off a 96 roadglide so I didn't change anything on it. Seems like it's a little rich but it starts and runs great, the only problem I've got with it is when she runs out of gas she runs out NOW! no warnings, burbs or farts just starts coasting. Is this normal with these carbs ? Thank's, Ed
P.S. anybody from the midwest out there ?

That is how the CV carbs on my Sportster and Dyna Glide used to behave. No warning, the motor just dies instantly. If it is any consolation, the Linkert on my pan does the same thing. No big deal, as long as you are not attempting a risky overtake when it happens!

ed,

i have run a cv on my 55 fl since '99. nice carb.

they do seem to just stop without much warning, you have to be quick on the reserve!

if you can find a yost power tube for your carb they do help the high speed operation.

i have had a mukuni, a zenith and a kehien on this bike, none of them run as nice as the cv. starting is easy hot or cold.

john

p.s. i'm north of you in wisconsin.

Ed-

Yea, I agree w/the other 'distinguished board members'..
Be quick to switch on to reserve. But I'm sure you will be getting Better gas mileage w/the CV, than it's predecessor...
It's not uncommon to p/up 10/15 more miles per gal..over an "E"..

96 R glide, does the idle/mix still have the "Anti-Tamper EPA" plug in it ?

For a quicker throttle response, the slide hole can be enlarged a specified amount. Depending on your motor combo/pipes etc...
As well as shortining the slide spring.. Many little mods that really make nice differences. Course Stock is fine, too.

My CV on my 45/stroker is tweaked & it pulls Good....

Friend bought a "Pingel" petcock, he didn't realize that he ordered a 'Race Petcock' (looks the same) "EXCEPT NO RESERVE" He found out the hard way. Pushing...

Hey Billy, How ya doing. My carb came with the plug out and a Knurled adjustable needle installed. I put it on, backed it out and primed her up, she lite up on the first kick and idled better than ever. I picked up almost 10 mpg. and runs great. I will know join the ranks of the CV believers, for modified only of course (cotten might see this). Ed

Hi Ed-

Doing good, Thanks...
Good point, (Modified ONLY) we don't want (him) to get upset..
Kids, Please Don't try this at home !!!

The 'knurled knob' (as we know) is aftermarket add-on.
I have had them back out 'a bit' after many grueling miles. Once you are set at how many turns out is 'perfect', Mark it down.. If it ever backs out on you. I like to add 1/4 drop of Blue Loc-Tite on threads ONLY. (To stay away from the TIP)
She will stay put then. & can be removed easily (if needed), too...

Picking up about 10 mpg is a wonderful thing, w/today's Hi-Gas prices.
Glad to hear you are pleased.
If in time you still feel you're running a 'bit rich', I think we can fix that.
Which if that is the case, you mileage will further improve also..

Good ta hear from you man!!!! 8)
Hope ALL is good !!!

I think you guys have me convinced, when I get my 51 back together I'm going to try the CV I had on my 99 roadking, I'll just have to figure out some air cleaner to use. It always seemed to me that S&SE was way too rich but when I put in smaller jets it coughed back thru the carb, possibly a side effect from running drag pipes. I'll be looking for some stock looking dual exhaust possibly from paughco, just dont know about that squish pipe in front, seems restrickted...It's a great spring in Mpls., really nice weather. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge I keep finding here, with no flamers...Mike

Guest, Please fill free to create a username and password and join us. Your correct about this site, it is full of good info from who I feel are a very knowledgable group of guys. I had the same problem with the S&S-E, you won't believe the difference with the switch. There is also a thread or two on forum 1 That goes into detail about how to mount air cleaners and the different types used, you might also try the Knowledge Base for more info. Ed

Mike-

Welcome- Just a good bunch of guys here keeping the ol Iron alive!

'99 R-King 1st year twincam..(rubber-mount) only.

The Air cleaner set-up I prefer is the Screaming Eagle kit; (K&N air filter)
Plus using the "nostalgia" air cleaner cover, from HD.
Looks pretty correct!! For our Dinosaurs!!! IMO..

Dyno results don't lie, CV ~vs~ S&S "E"
CV= 5 more Hp..
CV= 5 more ft lb torque.
+ better gas mileage, These results were done on my ol '63FL stroker.....

Squish Pipe: "squish pipe in front, seems restricted"
Simple test: take a piece of 1 3/4"exhaust (same length as squish pipe)
Fill w/water.. Dump into measuring cup. (then) Dump that measured amount into squish pipe....Note the results..

Ed, Billy, yeah that was me,panacea, the server keeps telling me sorry, but this user name has already been taken. so I cant log in, my computer skills are coming along slowly. It might be because I'm using two diferent computers. Billy,I was wondering if anyone has tried hooking up the breather on a pan to the carb backing plate, or would that just make a big mess?

OK not guest, panacea-
I understand

Anyway, I don't even hook up the evo's or tc 88's to backing plates..
Not saying you shouldn't, but I don't..
On my ol'97 R-King I did originally hook it up, but it just made a mess...
Been just running them to the underside w/tiny screen filter attached..
Pans inhale & exhale thru breather tube. (reason for screen filter)
In some cases I aim it at the Rear chain. (lil xtra lube mist) FWIW
