Carburetor overflow

Even though it is the petcock's job, Folks,

Some still complain of drool from carburetors upon short periods of sitting, inspite of a floatvalve that passes the "suck test".
(As per the manuals, the bowl is inverted, and inspection requires intimate contact upon the inlet.)

I may have found one culprit overlooked, that may explain a few mystery puddles.

Justified by peer review or not, Liberty must now be charge to degauss all floatvalve needles other than our own inventory.

The deeper into Linkerts I get, the more I am humbled.

I'll bite... are you thinking a magnetized needle will pick up garbage ferrous from the gas system, preventing it from seating properly? And, what about this realization is humbling? Were OEM needles not steel?

Just curious, is the seat also magnetic, or even ferrous?

Nice one Cotton!--- ?--if needle becomes magnetized, how strong of a STICK would it have?, also wouldnt it discharge some thru the pin?--(i dont know!)--But I think it would have to be one hell of a magnetized needle to overcome the float in the gas!, then again I never tried it!--very intresting, curious to see where this goes.----Richie

As Pan-kicker said sounds probable that a small piece of whatever might stick to it!--But all that fuel flowing past at a steady 60mph would wash it away--you think?

Any time a customer has a complaint, it is humbling.
I read somewhere that the needles were Monel, but Scrap would have to test several for us, as there is a variety.
My Monel round stock is slightly magnetic.

I have a conventional demagnetizer, but for these I may put a new power cord upon a jeweler's coil from the dumpster.

The problem is when sitting (with a poor petcock).
Rust flakes are the most likely objects to hold the valve open enough to seep. The weight of a flake might be a thousandth of the weight you see suspended in my photo.

No offense Mr. Cotton but if rust flakes are causing a problem with the needle and seat than wouldn't the prudent thing to do is eliminate the rust from the fuel system like the tanks and fuel lines? And talk about wreakin' havoc with all the small openings in the carb.

I do know that leakage at the needle can be a maddening problem and cause the bowl to overflow but I've found that the viton tipped needle and seat sold by Starklite is a superior product to the steel units.

And Richie!

If a motor gets 30 mpg,
and 60 mph is a mile a minute,
then it takes a half an hour for the valve to pass a gallon of fuel.

That's about a double-shot trickled through in a full minute.

The cycling of the float probably does more to keep the needle clean than the flow!

And Mr. Big!

I cannot possibly request every carb rebuild to be accompanied by gastank cleaning.
Even the manifold issue does not allow that, although I try.

Starklite's needle is indeed holding well in my test vial, although I confess that I have not been changing the fuel often.
However my philosophy has two requirements, whether sensible or not:

First, to be as faithfull to original design as possible...
(We all know that technology marches on of course!)
And to present as few targets for digestive fuel as possible,
not only now, but for the future. Anything "soft" is subject.

If anything can bite, it will.

One question that arises is how can "Viton" be black OR red?

Even if Starklite's were "perfect", I cannot justify the expense of replacing each and every valve assembly that is serviceable, but magnetized!

Electricity mystifys me, Folks.

So I keep it primitive if I can:

I push the button,

and there is no hum or buzz until I pass the needle through the coil with a set of hemostats insulated with vinyl tubing over its jaws.
It takes two passes, through and back, to reduce the needle's effect upon a compass needle to minimal.

A compass tells me the metal still has its "magnetism", but its polarity has been moved from its ends to its center.

No rebuild is complete without a demagnetized floatvalve needle!

R-Monel is magnetic, K-Monel is not. If you're serious, I'd be happy to test. There is a school of thought that believes in the healing power of magnetism. Magnetic wrist bands, magnetic shoe sole inserts , magnetic float valves. Heck, if it can heal bodily fluids, why not petroleum fluids. Perhaps L&L was anticipating the low grade gasoline we now use.

Scrap!

I have a small collection of throttle bushings set aside for testing as well, if it is convenient.
And I would be curious to know if my modern Monel stock is really what I paid for...

If you would like to know the type of metal or alloy you have in question, I have access to an X-Ray Fluorescence analyzer which provides non destructive testing of the sample. It spits out the commercial name of the sample, e.g. EC Copper, CP Titanium, 6-4 Titanium, 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, Monel 600, Monel 400, Inconel, 6063 Aluminum, 6061 Aluminum, etc, etc...also the percentage of every element contained in the sample.
