ANOTHER ISSUE SPROCKET ON BRAKE DRUM

Guys before I stored my old pan I sheered off all the rivets that hold the sprocket to the brake drum. will hardened allen bolts threaded into the drum & sprocket holt it ?

Nuts and bolts are NOT the answer, not even screws or bolts threaded into tapped holes. Part of the problem is clearance at the bolt head and the other part is having them come loose, no matter how much LockTite you put on them or how tight you try to make them during installation.

The rivets were used for a reason, and a good one, they keep the sprocket aligned to the drum and they stay tight (if installed properly). The MoCo supplied a fixture to the shops that held the drum so that it could be rotated, one rivet at a time, placing each rivet head over an anvil so that it could be peaned and tightened. If the holes in the drum have been enlarged or wallowed out you can drill a new set of holes and reposition the sprocket, but you should still attach it with rivets.

The H-D part number for those is 8485, they are 9/64" x 1/2" round head solid rivets and you should be able to get them from just about anybody that sells parts for the old big twins. They used the same rivet from about 1930 to at least the end of the hard tail days, and beyond.

Bob, The stock rivets will only work if the holes haven't been worn larger. You can spin the sprocket and drill new holes as was already suggested, or you can make oversize rivets. A buddy of mine used a welding rod to make oversized rivets for my '59. Good luck

Ridged rivets are 1/8". If there egged out just redrill and use 61 and up 3/16". Job done.

Rivets can also be obtained from McMaster Carr.com. I use a larger rivet, redrill the holes,& hammer em up. If they will not sell to you, I''ll get you some.
