Right hand brake HydraGlide fork

Hello.

I got an real good offer on a right-hand drum hydra fork, complete with top-trees, axle and complete drum brake.

My questions are:

* Will this setup fit with a star-hub? If not, what mods will be needed? (axle, sleeve etc)

* Will 50´s tins and headlight fit?

I think the fork is from a 1970 Electra.

I think the right hand drum brake used the sealed bearing hubs. This means one bearing in the hub, another in the brake drum itself. There may be a way to run a star hub but I don't know the details.

Rick is correct, everything in the hub is completely different for the right hand drum brake.

I'm not sure about the big twins but they made the switch on the servi-cars in 1967, 1966 was the last year for star hubs.

Thanks. I was aware of the newer type of hub.
I think that I´ve heard of guys running right-hand brake with star hub.
I also recall about hearing of some "side conversion" from right to the left, probably
with a left-hand drum on a right-hand brake front end...
Any ideas?

i would imagine the axle is different too.

you can see two part numbers in mike's diagram.

Right you are John, the #43 axle if for the star-hub. Don't pay too much attention to the 58-66 year span, 1958 was the first year they used the glide forks on the servi.

Here is the other page from the servi parts book showing the rest of the legend for the diagram above.

Jonas, I would think that you would have to use an early brake drum mounted on the right side if you wanted to run a star-hub. I have never attempted a conversion like that but I imagine that it would invlove quite a bit of cobbling to get it set up correctly.

Easy conversion to star hub. If you have the wheel, all you need is the spacer and early axle and a brake drum. All the tins will fit except the top because of the different riser style. You can even machine the center out of the late drum and use it. The coolest front end I have seen had twin brakes, a left and a right on the same fork, with a walking beam type equalizer for the cable a la Vincent.

Hello - Robbie I am branew to this forum - and I was hopeing you could explain this conversion 2 me? I bought a right hand drum frontend (cause it was cheap) n I have the hub axle and spacers from a star wheel - I thought I could just flip the whole deal and run on the right site - is there more to it ? Thanks for any help!!

You will need an early drum as well. The standard one for a '67 to '72 brake wont fit a star hub. If you have the early drum, the star hub, the early axle and spacer, it will all bolt into your right hand set-up. But you need all those pieces to do it. Do you have the backing plate and shoes? You need to use the right side backing plate, a left side won't fit.

Thanks for the reply Robbie - I do have the complete star front wheel setup with all brake parts - axle,drum,hub,plate but I do not have the back plate 4 a right side setup - So I will need that to make things work right?
