I just noticed a leak on the rear area of the rear head on my '48 pan. It's coming from what seems to be plug in the head (refer to pictures).
Q's--What is that plug there for? What could happen if this were to continue--e.g, damage to the head, etc? Is there agood way to plug it up without removing the head--such aswith JB Weld Stick?

Re: '48 rear head leak
Doc!
The plug is a "welch plug" installed at the factory to seal an oil gallery drilled from that end.
Although replacement is not complicated, I suggest trying to seal it from the outside if you can.
I am not familiar with "JBWeld stick', but strenuous de-greasing and wicking-grade Loctite may do it.
Myself, I use an isocyanate urethane watertower paint that sticks through oil with amazing success.
