Remove heads - with engine still in frame?

#1

Post by Henrik_K »

I've decided to take the heads and possibly barrels of my FL '56 Panhead. Is this possible without removing the engine from the frame?

Thanks.

You will only have to lift them about 1/8" off the cylinder to clear the fire ring...Mike

But how about the rockerbox covers?

They seems to be awful close to backbone? 10mm. or so.

The rocker box covers come off with the heads.
If your engine hasn't been apart for a while, I would suggest inverting the head/rocker box assembly, after removal, and saturating the bottom of the rocker box screws with Kroil or similar, let it soak an hour, before attempting to remove the screws. This will reduce the chance of breaking a screw in the head.
