Valve tappet cage

#1

Post by 55panFL »

Can someone please explain this to me. I looked but cant find what they are referring to. this is out of the manual
My bike is in the 3000's. Is this something I should do?

VALVE TAPPET CAGE- Install brass tappet
plugs # 18529-55 in oil drain holes.
This prevents engine from smoking at idle speed.
(Started engine # 55 FL 4126). If plugs
are not available, use solid plug and drill
with 60 drill.

55panfl!----For the life of me I could not find this in any of my manuals, not for panhead.--If its smoking at idle ,then valve-guides are worn & should be replaced!. As far as blocking oil-feed with brass-plugs then opening them up with a .060 bit!-dont sound like something I would do. But also remember our factory manuals were really generous on the wear side of parts!----Its all I can tell you 55PANFL!---hopefully somebody chime in about this!---respectfuly --RICHIE /Sorry I meant oil-drains!--then open to .060

p. 119, Richie.

Still not sure what a "Valve Tappet Cage" is, though.

Very confusing to me, Folks!

Not only "what's a tappet cage",
but should only cages after #4126 be plugged?

Wouldn't they have corrected it eventually?

The font is different from the rest of the page, so we must assume it was an edit by the fellow who compiled the collection of literature that we call a 'manual', although the MOCO never produced it.

The tappet guides of a '55 on my bench look like a shovel block in my stash, and it has a 6000 VIN number.
