I don't know what year they changed but I'm pretty sure the fabric covering was used well into the mid 1960's so a 55 would have had fabric. The fabric was usually trimmed near the clamp & the clamp went around the coil & not over the fabric. The coils had a Parkerized ferrule soldered to the end. There used to be a company manufacturing replacements but I don't know if they're still around or not. Anyone have more detailed info. ???

According to Palmers it looks like fabric might have been used until '72, I don't see anything about the plastic ones.

I think the plastic cover started in 1962. If you look at the 62 speedo in Palmer's book you can see the
plastic covered clutch cable, so maybe even late 1961.
