48-54 inner primary different than 55-64. early has hole

48-54 inner primary different than 55-64. early has hole

I'm looking at my 59 pan inner primary that I ordered long ago but just now put it on . I see it has a hole to the rear of the engine sprocket thet the 55-64 one hasn't got . Since dirt and stuff can get in this hole I'm wondering what its for ,and should I just plug it . I dont mean the hole the eng oil comes in through ,this is an oval hole you could stick the end of your thumb in.

The breather uses 2 holes.

the 48-54 primary will not fit your 59 engine.

I have the inner 48-54 bolted securley to my 59 eng and it apoears to fit perfectly. What should I look for Awanderer?
Hog54 can you give me more info regarding the 2 holes being breather holes please? Was one just meant to be open to allow air in and out ? Or was there something that went into the forward hole ?
The reason i'm asking is to make sure I wont run into trouble by using the early one .

As was stated by Hog54 pre '55 primaries have a smaller hole for the engine shaft and do not bolt up to '55 and later engines using a Timken bearing main and splined shaft. If you post a picture of what you have you will get actual responses rather than guesses based on your comments. Since a stock early cover cannot fit a '59 engine something about what you have is not what you say it is. You either have a later cover or an earlier engine! Or possibly some odd generic aftermarket cover made to fit anything, which could explain the excess holes as well. '58 and up breathers stick straight out from the stud, rigid frame types are elbowed. What kind are you using?

If it does,then you have to use the 57 and older breather to fill both holes.

It seems I have a " one fits all" inner that I got from Antique cycle some time ago. It isnt the greatest of workmanship,I had to grind the lower front tab down to clear the frame. I'm going to try and attach a photo of it .
Yes hog54 it does look like the one you send the site of. Myquestion is still what do I do with the unused hole ? Just plug it?

I guess this would be a good time to ask what size drill bit is needed to enlarge the rear chain hole to accept the stock drain tube?

I have discovered just now that the drain tube I have isnt to drain the oil onto the rear chain, but lets it run onto the ground. I realized that when I looked at part # 63591-62 rear chai oiler kit.54-64. The drain tube looked odd to be used to oil the rear chain. now things make more sense.
