The answer to the shovel handle is easy.... makes it easier to 'toss a shovel-full'...!
(Having tossed a few shovelfuls myself, that's what I'm thinkin'....)

I have been doing some painting lately myself, just small parts while I have the bike apart. Been thinking of painting the tins, but it's been cold and I'm hesitant to paint over the professionally painted dinged up tins.

I'm sure '1950panhead' took the tins inside to cure after he shot them outside. That's what I would do.

I've done a little painting myself, but it was years ago. I surely want to try it again, ... and a decent paint job is all about the prep, with a little bit of technique and common sense thrown in.

Am I right, 1950panhead? Tell us more....

Very nice, I've done the below freezing paint myself. Just make sure the prep is good and you have a warm place to cure afterwards!

I have sprayed in less then ideal conditions myself!---I try to cover floor inside garage & make a makeshift booth out of visqueen--then bring the temp in garage or shed whatever to as warm as it will get!----wet the floor/shoot a test piece-(side of garbagecan)-do it at different distences! Less is better & patience to wait for each coat to dry is important!--Your betteroff dusting the parts & wait /It will just take more coats for GOOD-EVEN cover!--Paint & gun & parts should be the same as the ambient temp. in your garage!--If your parts are in from the livingroom They will be warmer & that is a good thing!-(little less dry-time)-by the time you hang them & wipe your prints off ,Parts will cool fast!--But you still get a very little of a quicker drying time. MORE EVEN coats is better in cold temps! Dont forget (runs & peel & fisheye) are magnified at colder temps.---Just adding my 2 from experience!--Good-Luck, Richie

1950 Panhead----Those parts look NICE,-Rims cameout great from the pic. that are posted!---Whenever I shot rims ,I always had the cust. spend $$ and I only shoot IMRON on them!---Its tuff &$$$ but it lasts!!!-(reg PPG or Dupont 2 step paint works well! As someone said ITS ALL IN PREP!--That goes double for rims!----Nice JOB

Rivetting without chipping might be a challenge.

I painted the rims and forks with two coats of PPG base followed by two coats of Extreme clear, the parts turned out very nice.
I heated the parts to 130 on my wood stove and brought them back in after painting.
I painted the tanks and fenders with PPG single stage + catalyst.
I heated the tanks and fenders to 100 on my wood stove and brought them in between coats.
tcb, the color is Skyway blue (41,42,46,47) PPG #13964, the color is a perfect match to original paint fenders.
58flh. I did get significant fish eye in the fenders, will probably sand some and spray another coat when spring arrives.

Jerry, would you consider the Skyway Blue a close match to Azure Blue?

I'm still trying to find a good example so I can approximate what it would look like on my '50..... but man, I'm loving that color! Can't wait to see you bike put together!

Azure blue is a dark blue, very different from Skyway blue.
