Fuel valve removal queston on my 64...

My fuel is very slow to drain from the left side tank with the valve in it. The right tank drains pretty good though. Can I remove / reinstall the fuel valve without any special tools? I would like to clean in out. Any thoughts? Its got the stock 64 tanks and fuel valve.

I just took my fuel valve out on my 62 and cleaned everything good then put back in. It now flows better from the left side reserve. You don't need the special tool the manual talks about if you are just going to clean the valve from a good tank.

I just took it apart and cleaned it. I wasn't bad. I put it back together and it flows the same...? Am I not aligning some holes right or something? I think the fuel valve rod might be a aftermarket one. I was reading about some valve alignment tool. Anymore thoughts?

Does it flow any different with the gas cap off the left side? May be the vent in the cap is stopped up.

Flow exactly the same with the cap off. I am thinking that the possible aftermarket fuel shut off assmbly be the problem...

I pulled most of my hair out once when a 45" rod had been installed.
Nah, that couldn't happen twice. Nevermind.

Did you clean the INSIDE of the rod?

One other thing you might check is the threaded collar on the rod, they were soldered on and sometimes come loose. If the collar has moved on the rod, or is slipping when you turn the valve, it may explain why the rod is not moving up off its seat to allow the fuel to flow.

I cleaned the inside of the rod. I don't rember the rod being threaded. There was a pin up top that the washer and spring sat on and the bottom was tappered. I did notice a few s
all air bubbles coming up from the valve area when I lifted the reserve. When the bike is not running the glass filter does not fill up. After I have the bike running it seems to fill about 3/4 of the way up. The filter is vertical under the left tank. I am running a SU carb on it. I took it for a short ride and it seemed fine...?
