Body filler on an oil tank.

Hi List.

I have been looking for a horeshoe oil tank and as you can imagine many are dented - is it ok to use body filler or is the heat too severe?

Joe,

Those tanks don't get hot enough to blister primer or paint, a little body filler is just fine for small dents.

I like the Dyna-Hair with fiberglass. Wear a mask or respirator when you sand it.

depending on the size and location of the dent you may be able to heat the dent and pop it out with compressed air.

otherwise, bondo will work fine.

I bought an oil tank that had been dented apparently. When I stripped it to re-paint it. I found that someone had used lead to fill a quarter size dent. I don't think bondo will hold up to heat or oil (simply covered with primer and paint) without some distortion later. Has anyone ever actually used bondo on an oil tank?

When I went to strip my bike years ago, I found the oil tank had a big slab of bondo / plastic body filler on it. It was not cracked or anything and had been on there for years. I ended up buying a repop tank rather trying to re-bondo the old tank.

YES, and I have had no problems with the paint

Sandblasting any item is the best way to get 'bondo' to real grab.
