Is this tank OEM

Post by dontsink »

Hi Gents,

Urgently need your help, i´ve the chance to get this tank for my restauration project. The Emblem isn´t the right one (mine is a 57 FL) but this should be no big issue. The real big question is:
Repop or OEM. What do you think. The link to the pics is : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/d7gi1awk3diz ... YXfga?dl=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thank you for your help,

Yours,
Thomas

Can't view your pictures, (not signing up to a site just to view them). No one makes a correct '57-'58 reproduction tank with the proper flat area for the emblem and correct emblem mounts.

Those are '51-'53 handshift tanks. There is no way to put '57 emblems on them but if you like the '51 type no problem. They look OEM in the pics, but how about a picture from above showing the rear end of the tanks, usually a dead giveaway for repop types.

Thank you Rob,

Do you think it´s possible to flatten the area where the emblems are mountet? There are mounting plates available which could be welded to the tank.
If i cant mount the round emblems i wont by this tank.

Thank you,
Thomas

In no way am I well versed in bodywork!--But I cant see screwing with OEM tanks Period.Patience will pay off!--Now as long as the Change dont screw it up so bad that they can be easily put back to OEM CONDITION/Thats another story & best left to the MEN who understand this work!---Just 1-mans opinion.--Respectfully---Richie

Please don't mess up those tanks by trying to turn them into 57 tanks.
It's hard enough to find tanks for specific years. Are they on e-bay?
Like Richie said keep looking, their out there.

Yeah, those are nice tanks, it would be an absolute crime to ruin them.
But if you're inclined to do such a thing, why not start with aftermarket tanks?
It just seems to me that if you want OEM tanks, you'd want the correct year OEM tanks.
If you modified those '51-53 tanks to make them '57, you'd be taking a $1,000 set of tanks and make them worth about $200.
The '57 tanks may be hard to find, you just have to be patient- and diligent.

Thank you guys for your answers. I´ve a set of aftermarket tanks where the 57 emblem mounts are weldet on, they are from CC - and usable.
I think i will buy these 51-53 tanks, the price is around 600, and wait for someone to swap for 57 tanks.

Thanks again for you replies,

Thomas

I think that's a pretty good strategy. The price is right there, and with the emblems and the shut-off, that sweetens it up.
Good luck on the hunt..!

$600 is a good price. If you decide to not buy them let me know, I will.
Thanks,
