1961 FLH tank emblem ..how to tell if OEM ??
I have a set of 1961 FLH fuel tanks with the metal emblem on the side ,I'm trying to figure how to tell if it's OEM. My 1991 springer also has the same emblem but I bought an after market one . The only difference I see is the aftermarket one has some paint on it. I removed the one I think may be OEM but found no printing or anything on the back. I bought the bike in 1987 and had it restored but dont remember replacing the emblems.

Here is a pitcure of what I beleve to be origonal to my 62 flh; they were put in storage in 1968. They are pitted and have nothing stamped on the back of them, however the ones I oredered from V-Twin have H-D on the back. Both fit perfectly on the origonal paint tanks.

The originals I have do not have markings of any sort on them.

I dug out my original 1962 emblems. They both have a RB on the back.

How about a picture. I know mine are known from the early '70s (in my possession), and the ones 62FLH has have been in his since '68. Interesting if there are variations on originals.I dug out my original 1962 emblems. They both have a RB on the back.

Looks like somebody stamped their initials on them.

Obviously the raised RB is not the defining factor as to originality since so many known originals do not have it. I still do not have a clue as to why there would be two versions. Perhaps two differnt vendors, or an initial run and then a second with a different mold.

I am the owner of your tanks, small world!
I have not taken the emblems off the tanks but I do have another set of 61/62 tanks with emblems to compare...now I am curious.

Yeah small world . I'm glad you like the tanks ( you message to me on ebay) Did you find a screw to replace the missing one?
I'll be interested in finding out for myself if they were OEM, I don't remember replacing the original ones and see them in a photo on my wall here of the bike in 1987 before it was restored and painted .
