60FL Crash Bar Mounting

#1

Post by Robert Luland »

Boys, I've hit another wall head on. For three months I've been collecting parts and trying to figure out how the rear crash bars bolt up to the frame. I've answered all my questions but one. The rear left side lower crash bar mount. As far as I've figured out the bar mounts to the inside of the frame casting, forward hole. The book (Completely useless as usual) calls for ether a 3/8X1.5/8" or 3/8X2.19/32" bolt for that year? Now this is where the mystery gets deeper. The forward hole in the frame casting is drilled all the way through but only tapped only 3/4" into the hole on the outside. This is a 64 frame. Is it possible that the 60 was drill straight through with no tapping for the longer bolt? Every picture I have, the bikes has duels so ya can't see the mounting. This is very, very weird. Anybody? Thanks, Bob L

I think it is mounted to the muffler support. I'm not sure if it's inside or out.

Hello Bob,

I posted a photo in the misc. files. It shows the left rear crash bar mounting set-up from my '60. Good luck!

Thank you very much Gentlemen, From your pictures it's obvious that both crash bars have to mount to the rear hole. It appears that they designed it look wise to follow the line of the shock which you don't get if it's mounted to the front hole. I just put a caliber on the rear hole and bar together. 1.1/8". There is the 1.5/8" bolt in the parts book if you're running a single exhaust. Tony if you look at your photo, you will see the muffler had to be slid back to clear the bar. This tells me the factory had problems from day one with that set up. I remember going though this twenty-five years ago with my other sixty that has duels. This is why I questioned it from the beginning. You just can't beat a set of duel fish tails. I mean it's pure motor head sex! Ya got to hear those puppies when I open up in the Holland Tunnel! Even Bloomberg knows I'm on my way. Thanks again, Bob L
