48' headlamp bracket and wiring questions
Good evening Gents
I am putting a 57 pan together with a 48' springer fork from scratch. I purchased a harness kit from Hummer Emporium for a 48'. This is the first time I have wired a bike and first time with a springer. It has a restored 2 light dash from Perry R. so that makes it easier. it looks pretty straightforward and I have a good start on it but my questions are -
On the 48' headlight bracket I'm told the "insulated terminals" go through the bracket. How many of them originally mounted to it? (3? 4?) and what would the terminal #'s be for wiring purposes? the 48' only diagram I don't quite understand and it's hard as hell to read but the 48 - 57 one is a lot clearer to me but it shows a circuit board for the hydra glide forks and of course the numbers are different on it.
Did the numbers change between 48' and 49' for the junction box behind the coil?
Sorry if these seem like dumb questions but I am learning one day at a time with wiring....
Thank you !!!
Jim

Re: 48' headlamp bracket and wiring questions
Just two, one on either side of the the horn mounting point. There are two other holes that can be used for accessory terminals. The terminal box behind the coil is the same from '48 up. Wire the bike as if it is a '48.How many of them originally mounted to it? (3? 4?
Are you using the diagram from the Knowledge Base?

Thanks Rubone
I've been using the ones in the 48' to 57 manual I have at home. Just trying to get my head around it. I just need to study it a little harder I believe....

Re: 48' headlamp bracket and wiring questions
A comment on the harness; I bought one from Hummer a handful of years ago for an early Glide model.
I recently bought another harness made by Bruce Linsday, which is a very accurate reproduction of the original.
Oh, speaking of original, I also have an old original wiring harness.
So, since I saw an opportunity to make a comparison, I did. I posted it here on the CAIMAG forum:

Having said all that, be prepared for some of your Hummer Emporium wires to be a tad short. Hopefully you don't experience what I found......

The bottom of that hydraulic shock is incorrectly mounted.
Should be rotated 180 degrees so you have easy access to the nuts.
The bolts have 2 flats machined on them & the shock bracket has 2 matching flats to prevent the bolt from turning.
Flatboy.

Flatboy,
You say the shock mounting bolts are reversed?
Interesting . . . because this is a photo from a supposedly all original '48 FL on display at the HD museum in Milwaukee. I have lots of pics of this bike and it really does seem to be the real unmolested deal.

Here is a pic of what I mean.
The workshop manual shows it this way. Actually the Parts Book ....
Palmers new book has a pic on P108 , Second edition , Vol 1.
On P899 Second edition Vol2 is another pic where you can see the inboard nut , obscured by the strap in your pic.

Flatboy50 is correct. The lower shock mount has a radius that matches the contour of the springs; this is a case of form follows function. The lower shock mount tabs face forward.

Yes, I see, that makes sense. I better get on the horn and call the museum and let them know they got it wrong!
Always a lot of corporate knowledge here. Thanks gents.

Let them know they got the 1941 Parts Manual wrong as well.

Re: 48' headlamp bracket and wiring questions
Living in southern Wisconsin has afforded me the privilege of visiting some of the shops that do the "official" restorations for the factory.
