i,ve been told that heat really affects belts. was this a open belt or inside the primary ? also what brand of belt & drive is it ?

Bob, I've had 11MM, 14MM belts. Open and closed primary and every one left me stranded! That thing is nothing more than a ticking time bomb. The cost of the belt, the damage to primary covers and then theres the tow. Total cost: One great weekend shot out the ass along with your wallet. Bob L

Tell us how you REALLY feel about belts.....

I agree, a properly adjusted, clean and lubricated chain will get you down the road, AND home again. With a compensater they're even better, and almost as smooth and quiet as one of those "reliable" belts. Might drip a little oil but hey, everybody expects that, its normal.

I guess I'm just lucky--- I've been running a Primo belt drive in my '41 pan (or is it a '59 knuck?) since 1975, still the same belt.

I put a belt drive on my 57 pan in 1980. had to get a new one last year.

to be honest all i was really looking for is to get rid of the dripping oil issue. a chain doesnt bother me i still have the entire assembly.

I've had really good luck with my Supermax belt drive. I use their Silent Drive with the polyurethane pullies. I put this belt drive on at around 10K miles. At about 40K miles, the transmission loosend up a little and misaligned the pullies. This popped the belt. I realigned the transmission and installed a new belt. I now have around 85K miles on the bike and this belt is still going.

Phil Ross (owner of Supermax) told me there were three belt killers... heat, misalignment and improper tension. I pay close attension to all three.

Edit: I forgot, I did lose a belt to road debris right after I installed the belt drive. I picked up a piece of wire while riding on the freeway that got sucked up into the belt and wound around it. That cut the belt clean.
