55-64 primary "chain housing plug"?

I have a '48 pan that evidently has a 55-64 primary cover. The issue is that there is a hole centered on the engine shaft that should probably have some sort of plug in it. The only places I have found them is on E-bay and http://WWW.jwboon.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Anybody know of a supplier that isn't in Europe or that is selling the whole primary tin? I just need this plug...

Are you sure it is a '55 up cover? If it is diamond type it is not. Lots of aftermarket compensator sprocket kits required drilling the cover for greasing the sprocket. Generic plugs are available at many hardware stores and auto parts stores.

48 should have inspection cover screws at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock, later years after 49 are 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock.

It looks like this one, the plug in question is the chrome bit.

That is an outer primary for a bike with a compensating sprocket.

Ok, now that I'm back on my home pc, here is the bike. In the background is my 96 Dyna, which has been nothing but trouble since day one. Once again, anyone know where I can source these plugs? Or if it is at ace hardware or something, where should I be looking in the store? Plumbing?

Ace Hardware, Tractor Supply, Rural King, or any other hardware type store.

Look in the specialty parts section. Most of these stores will have a section of small drawers/containers of all sorts to small pieces that you never knew you needed. I don't know exactly what they are called but I would look for Chrome Plugs. It will have flexible teeth on the inside to hold it in and flat finish on the outside. If you have to have exactly the right part, the parts book says its 60650-54A

What's the diameter of that hole, I might have a stainless plug that will work.

Lowbikemike, I lifted that picture off of an ebay listing. It is still current as of today, auction "Original Harley NOS 1955 Panhead Transmission Outer Primary Cover" looks like the current bid is $199.

Jdpan, if I remember correctly the hole is 1.150". I'll double check after work, but I think that's what I calipered it at. Thanks.

Those plugs are called knockouts in my neck of the woods and are used to fill open slots in electrical panels and boxes.Most any hardware or electrical supply house should have them.

Hand grip end plugs would almost work.Im almost positive they sell them at home depot or lowes too.

Most knockout plugs for electrical boxes will typically be zinc-plated, and lots of them have a stepped profile. They don't look as nice as the slightly-domed chrome plugs.

I sold a half dozen or so of those plugs to Carl Olsen at Freemont this past February. Perhaps he'd sell one. For the cost, maybe a substitute would work.

I'm pretty sure a hardware store or Home Depot will have the nice chrome one to fit.
