O-ring rear chain for my pan ???

#1

Post by neilw »

Ive been thinking of a O-ring rear chain with my stock primary drive assembly on my 59 pan . I heard they might be a tad wider and I'd have to allow for this.
As far as maintenence do I need to do much to maintain it? If so what and how often ?

I run a o-ring chain on my pan with the stock primary tins. 24t transmission sprocket. No clearance issues but I'm not running a stock fender. I wipe the chain with WD40 and then hit it with chain wax once a month (about 1200 miles). Usually get about 25k miles from a set of chain & sprockets.

And you won't know it until it is too late.

I run a Tsubaki O-Ring and it is so wide that it rubs the stock type chain guard on a rigid set up. I ended cutting a portion out of the chain guard where it intersects with the frame and moved the guard over a bit. Added a gusset to the top inside of the chain guard near the relief and everything is fine....bosheff

Thanks to everyone. I'm running a swingarm, but I just was looking and have 3/8 inch clearance between present non o-ring chain and the fender. I notice the lower front of the rear fender is hiden by the chain guard I can easilly cut away a bit of fender if need be and it will be hidden from view. This is to be a bike to ride not show, so I'm not looking to scoire pouints at a bike show.

I run an O-ring chain on my '62. One of the best upgrades I've made. No real clearance problems.
Periodic adjustment intervals are way farther apart compared to a standard chain. Go for it.

I ran an O-ring chain on my 51, I did have to add a couple washers behind the rear primary tab and if the chain is a tad loose it will tap the chain guard a bit. Never hit the fender though...Mike

Hi all,

anybody have a part number for those o ring chains?

I am not going to have a clearance issue on my project as it don't have a original rear fender, nor chain guard...or inner/outer primary covers.

Thanks a lot.

I used one for a couple years, then went back...still hanging in basement, I think. Do O-ring chains do better on minimal lubrication?

O-ring chains are internally lubed at the factory with O-rings added to keep the lube captured. The exterior will rust to some degree if you don't use some sort of lube to prevent rust or corrosion. PJ1 works good to stop the elements from doin their thing. Once you go to an O-ring chain you'll never go back to the old style conventional. Usually one adjustment after initial run in is all that is required. 40011-84 was the factory supplied O ring chain with 112 links, and 40016-84 was a 110 link chain. To the best of my knowledge they were manufactured by Tsubaki. These were standard on some FXR's from 1984 through 1986. Most O ring chains use a special press to install the side plate for the master link. H-D also furnished these presses through Kent-Moore but the part number escapes me at the moment....bosheff

Despite the fact that O-Ring chains are factory lubed and sealed, that only lubes the INSIDE of the rollers. The outside surface needs a certain amount of lubrication between the rollers and sprocket teeth. Without something on that surface wear is accelerated and the self lubed chain is no better than a conventional one!

On O-ring chains use O-ring lubricant only , and you may want to block off dripper from primairy to rear chain. Lube when done riding and later when chain cools wipe off extra.
