clutch springs

#1

Post by StueyC »

I have a new set of 1-3/4" clutch spings and need to know if they are OK to fit to my panhead clutch. The manual says free length is 1-1/2" as the correct length. I think the spings I have are shovel but if the clutch hub and shell is the same on the pan and shovel why would the spings be different lengths? The new plates I bought were sold to me as pan or shovel so the stack height must be the same.

You can sure try them! as long as the clutch holds for kick starting a hot motor, that's all the tension you'll need. Do you have a mousetrap? the long springs may be a tough squeeze at the clutch lever...Mike

Hi Mike, I don't have a mousetrap. Why would the spings from 1966-1984 be longer than the pre 66 springs if the rest of the clutch assembly is the same?

Shorter springs are for mouse trap and foot clutches - shorter travel than mouse trap eliminator setups.

Thanks sSchwee, I'll fit the longer springs and see how they go.

What are the correct clutch springs when using a mousetrap? Part number? Suggestions?

There is no such thing as mousetrap specific springs. There are only two types, the -41 for the newly introduced clutch used through '67 on both hand and foot shift models, and the -68 type for the new release assembly from '68 up.
The early springs are quite stiff and the mousetrap was used to overcome the tension without excessive lever pull when the footshifter started to be used in '52. The -68 spring is much softer to pull and was used for all the '68 and later types after the mousetrap was eliminated. The soft ones use the 5 plate clutch pack, however either set works with any clutch whether hand or foot if adjusted correctly. The stiff ones are set at 31/32nds, the softer at 1-1/16th.
