clutch hub nut seal

according to clymers, a fix for this nut is to double seal it, I cant for the life of me see how I could fit two seals there.
Any suggestions on this, I know there were two seals in there, but I'm not sure if one was cut to fit.
It seems the side wall of the seal is thicker than the side of the nut I'm assuming it slides into.
or did they have the wrong seal in the james kit ?

Right or wrong,
I double-sealed clutch hub nuts for a quarter century.
This is the only positive reference to a Clymer H-D manual that I remember...
for what that's worth.

Even Mexican V-TWIN seals fit and worked fine,
So the question is what better idea has JAMES attempted?
(I would have to break a kit to inspect one, and they are at very least a decade old anyway.)
None the less, JAMES put an enormous sealer coating upon mainshaft seals and other similar seals.
I guess pressing off the excess is expected, and it centers itself upon its metal housing.

Have you measured the interference?

well I bought another clutch hub nut and seals
the seals are exactly the same as in the kit, and one ones that I removed from the original nut, so there right as far as the seals go.

Now the second nut I purchased, looks the same from the outside , same measurements ,length, width etc...

but inside there is a difference.

The original nut has what looks like a metal lip inside , from the top end to the top of the metal lip 11mm deep.

the second nut does not have this lip and the seals will fit fine inside. however, the second nut does not screw down as far as it should
on the shaft

the second nut purchased from bikers choice lists eom # 37496-65 ( same as parts manual number)

The "lip" you observe is most likely the seat for a 'snap-ring', which retained an OEM spring, flat washer, and cork seal.
That nut should be able to accept stacked seals, which mostly benefit from moving the wear point upon the clutch pushrod.

If everything was fresh and correct, it would be fine.

Can you give us numbers about the inside diameters?

It ALWAYS comes down to numbers. We are blind without them.

In looking at this nut a little closer, it looks like this "lip" is and insert, I can see the bottom of it , just short of the top threads.

well I banged this insert out, now both seals fit fine
both measure out to be the same top is .970 , bottom is .862

Funny just this morning I pulled the clutch to replace the clutch hub nut seal. I ordered from Colony. It came with a modern rubber oil seal and a cork seal. . Both would never fit so I went with the modern oil seal, the spring, one washer and the clip. I would think that should work. I believe its a 1952 Trans. Any thoughts...

Thoughts.. for me.. come slowly these days,... Pdqrunner!

But no matter what you cram in there, the pushrod needs to be nice, at least where the seals touch it.
