Clutch Springs

#1

Post by steve_wood »

Anybody have a picture of a rig used to measure the strength of clutch springs?

The manual says they should be 43 to 52 pounds when compressed to 1-1/8 inches.

Mine are a bit suspect. The manual says they should be 1-31/64 under no load. I've got three at 1-30/64, six at 1-29/64 and one at 1-28/64.

Any of these will work. Or as Cotten says! Remember, necessity is the mother of invention!

Excellent. Drill press and a bathroom scale. Why didn't I think of that?

Wow. Measured them all. Average length was 1-29/64 with the longest being 1-30/64 and the shortest being 1-28/64.

Average strength was 37.5 (digital bathroom scale - don't tell the wife) with the strongest being 39.6 and the weakest being 35.4

Guess that's a big fail right?

Steve!

Were your specs for -41, or -68 springs?

Methinks the late ones are weaker, to accomodate an extra plate, and for handclutch comfort.

I ran die springs in my footclutch stroker, when pulling a hack proved too much for a "modern" clutch pack. And an extra big round spring in the middle of them!
(If my flywheels hadn't been too light, the original four-plate probably would have lasted forever.)

I was going with the -41 specs. That would seem to be correct for my 56 FLH.

Steve!

If they are the loose-wind variety, and you found them with a riveted four-plate clutch, and no other apparent intrusions,
then it would seem they are indeed fatigued.

Usually that takes a footclutch left up in the sissy position for a few years.

I have a set on order from old dude. When they arrive, I'll check them on my rig to get a baseline of the measurement. In the meantime, I'll try taking half of them out with no mousetrap and see what that gives.
