Cotten, give me a hand

Cotten!
Can I use a countershaft cluster with caged rollers in a panhead tranny?
If so, what countershaft do I use (original, .753, to big)?
Thanks, Jerry

Not Cotten but yes you can. You just need to use all the associated parts including the case bushings. So you need the case bushing, countershaft, cluster gear, bearings, etc. And you will need to change or install a speedo drive gear.

Thanks Robbie,

Modern stuff is unfamiliar to me.
Except I seem to remember it was a rather fragile assembly compared to fitted loose rollers.

Or even compared to sloppy loose rollers, come to think of it.

Once again the factory chose the cheaper to build route over the tried and true methods. The gearbox was changed very little from '36-'77. But it cost too much to hand fit so standardized shafts and bearings were chosen to speed things up. I have used lots of late internals in old transmissions with no ill effects. But most of my vintage stuff is used on a less frequent basis than what was intended when new. So I don't worry too much about longevity if we are talking the difference between 80,000 and 100,000 miles. I won't live long enough to find out!
