Panhead transmisson gear interchange

Im working on a early Panhead transmission pre 59 and the low-second gear cluster is missing. I have found many 59 up gears but not the pre 59. I have found out the pre 59 is a 15-20 tooth count as is the 59. So why wont the 59 fit?

The difference is in the way the third gear interacts with the 1st/2nd cluster. Pre '59 the third gear had a fairly narrow brass bushing in it and the cluster had a thrust face it ran against. It tended to wear prematurely and cause the well known "third gear whine". In '59 the new style had a third gear with an extended shoulder and no bushing, steel on steel with lubricant grooves. It worked very well. Unless you are dead set on early gears, use the '59 up third and matching cluster. (it has a deep recess for the extended gear) and you will have a better overall gearbox.
And I would not use a V-Twin gear for a doorstop!

You are telling me that I did not find bushed gears in my own machines?

Don't call me a liar.

My first was a Kansas City PD machine in '75.
The next was a trashed bagger a few years later, and the third derelict a couple more.
The odds that these were all retro-dated within fifteen years is pretty slim.
Nothing else had been fixed!

Ok its not that I want to run a original gear , it was I just didnt know why if the tooth count was the same why it wouldnt interchange without the additional gear. So the recess in the gear sounds to be the reason. Thanks for the info.

V Twin lists their gears (doorstops as Rubone suggests) or Andrews (which are the best choice)
