Trans Countershaft Cluster Gear 35700-62,69,73

Hi Folks,
I am trying to understand the differences in the three years for Countershaft Cluster Gear 35700-62,69,73, and was hoping to get some help with questions I have:
It looks like the difference is the speedometer gear in each instance, and otherwise they are all interchangeable with each other?
I believe Palmers says that the speedometer gear can be replaced on this cluster. How difficult is this?
If I use the corresponding speedometer drive unit meant to mesh with a given cluster, will that require a different ratio speedometer?

You are correct about the ratios changing. The '62 and '69 clusters are otherwise interchangeable. The gear is pressed on and is replaceable. The ratio changed on the '69 style gear, the '62 style needs the matching drive gear but will work with the early types of speedos, the correct one being the tombstone face from '62-'68. The '73 gear I believe does not have a drive gear as it is for the front wheel driven speedometer models. Without a parts book in front of me I would say that is is also a different 1st gear ratio for the Superglide models and will not interchange with the early ones.

It is true that the 73 and later FX's use a different 1st gear on the countershaft as well as the mainshaft cluster, but the countershaft itself is interchangable because countershaft 1st is not part of the countershaft. Countershaft 1st is a seperate gear that fits on the countershaft cluster....bosheff

Bosheff is correct, I was thinking whole assembly. The only difference in the '73 cluster is that it never came with a speedo gear on it.

Thanks for the confirmations guys. The -62 assembly is difficult to find, but looks like I've got an alternate plan now!
