GENERATOR PROBLEM
I am wondering if anyone could help me out, yesterday i rode my 62 all day bike ran fine but after 60 miles i stopped at a light and the bike died like it ran out of gas i noticed my generator light was not on and i had no lights i kicked her over a couple of times and she fired up i took the bike over to a parking lot 1 block away when i came to a stop she died again no lights, etc.i checked my battery 13 volts,i waited a 1hr or so rode the bike home it was dusk now i noticed my generator light was barely on when i would slow down my lights would go almost out as soon as i pulled into my driveway the bike died again no lights no anything i hooked up my battery tender for a hour or so still no power at all, my battery is still at 13v i checked my connections to battery there are good,i also while the bike was running wiggled the ignition switch to see if that would kill the bike and it didn't.i am at a loss.

Re: GENERATOR PROBLEM
or a bad wire under the coil at the junction hook ups, or a bad wire at the switch. in bad, I mean loose terminal ends or busted, corroded wires...etc

Re: GENERATOR PROBLEM
Might want to test the generator to see how much amperage it's putting out.

Re: GENERATOR PROBLEM
OK HERE WE GO,MY BRAND NEW BATTERY DIED IT HAS 13 V BUT NO POWER,I PUT I 5.5 AMP 12V BATTERY HE STARTED TALKING ABOUT WATER IN A BATH TUB! WATER I HAVE NO CLUE! I'M ABOUT READY TO SELL THE BIKE.OR GO WITH A MAG THIS IS B.S.THIS IS WAY TO STRANGE FOR ME, MAYBE ITS THE REGULATOR ?

Re: GENERATOR PROBLEM
I SHOULD ADD TO WHAT I WAS SAYING I HAVE A NEW 65A GENERATOR WITH A LOW OUTPUT REGULATOR FROM CYCLE ELECTRONICS I CALLED THEM TO FIND OUT IF THIS SET UP WOULD WORK WITH A 12 V - 12 AMP BATTERY THE MAN WHO I TALKED TO REALLY NEVER GAVE ME A STRAIGHT ANSWER HE STARTED TALKING ABOUT WATER IN A BATH TUB? WHEN I PUT THE 12V - 5.5 AMP BATTERY IN THE BIKE FIRED UP ITS AT 13 V AT IDLE WHEN AT 1500 RPM ITS AT 14.4 V AS SOON AS I TURN MY LIGHTS ON EVERYTHING DROPS DOWN 12.5 V AT IDLE 13.2 V AT 1500 RPM I HAVE CHANGED MY RUNNING LIGHTS TO LED I AM WONDERING IF I SHOULD GET RID OF THE REGULATOR AND USE A BOSCH OR ACCEL REGULATOR WITH MORE OUTPUT?

Re: GENERATOR PROBLEM
mark,
not quite sure what you are getting at with the bath tub comment.
your battery has voltage but no power? did you load test it to discover this?
how is your wiring harness? old frayed? made out of the proper gauge wire?
assuming the battery is fully charged and in good shape you will need to look at the three other major components in the system.
switch, junction block(s) and regulator.
this also assumes the generator is actually working too. have you checked the output of it yet?

Re: GENERATOR PROBLEM
my wiring harness is new and the right gauge wire, the battery that was in the bike will take a full charge 13v but when you connect it turn ignition on nothing happens at ignition switch and the volts start falling off fast,so as i said i put another battery[12v-5.5 amp] in and the bike has power and runs the genny is charging at idle 13.1 to 13.3 v at a high idle its at 14.4v as soon as i turn all my lights on battery drops voltage,i have checked my swith and junction box all seems well what i am thinking the low output reg. isn't keeping up with the amps i'm using.according to cycle electronics they are telling me to get rid of my lights all but head and tail lights.so i'm wondering if the bosch reg.might be a better option for more amps?john HD wrote:mark,

Re: GENERATOR PROBLEM
Have you tried the system with just the headlight/taillight in place; no bulbs in anything else?

a bosch or a good old 2 unit delco might cure your problem.
this is assuming of course, there is no problem with the generator itself!

Re: GENERATOR PROBLEM
You may well be using more than your batt./ reg. can keep up with . You will always see a decrease in voltage a little when you put the batt. under load , with lights on.
If you have 13 volts at the batt. & your lights won't work , you have some thing open some where or a short. What condition is your ign. switch ?
If I read this right , you have 14 volts when @ 2000 rpms or such , sounds like your gen. /reg. are working. I never did like those little 5.5 volt batt. , not enough juce , for me .
I'M DAMN SLOW TYPING I SEE.

Re: GENERATOR PROBLEM
You will always see a slight drop in voltage when you start drawing current from the battery. Does the output from the generator ever rise above 13.3 volts at higher revs with the lights on? At this point, I wouldn't be too worried about the voltage readings you're getting and just ride the bike for awhile, and see if the battery stays charged up. You found your original problem, the faulty battery. I had an internal connection go "ohmic". Fancy talk for a poor internal connection, that wouldn't let you draw out any current from it.
Go riding and see what develops.
