Armature teeth number

#1

Post by kell »

Planning to rebuild the generator in my 52 FL, which was converted to 12v at some time in the past.
Wondering why the gear on the armature has 14 teeth.
Thought the conversion took a 13 tooth gear.
Maybe it doesn't matter, but I don't want to order the wrong armature.
Can anybody shed some light on this subject?

Well my brain cells just woke up. The 13 tooth is for the big twin and the 14 is for the higher revving sporster.

What are you using for a regulator? After trying just about everything else, I've had good success with the style that bolts to the end of the generator and has the red and green LED lights that tell you what the charging system is doing. Cycle Shack sells one like this, but for the last year I've been using the Custom Chrome version.

I have an Accel regulator.
Did two things that have relieved my charging headaches:
* Put a new armature and field coils in.
* Grounded the field. (Ran a wire from the F terminal to ground.)
The bike didn't used to charge until you had the revs way up.
