Generator/Voltage Reg. Testing

#1

Post by bonham3 »

Hello

First of all, thank's to all of you for your help on my other problems.
They have been solved (So Far:) 48 Pan
My last concern is about proper testing of my Gen. and or Volt. Reg.
My voltage reg. (I run an electronic ignition-mallory and ign. module,
dyna coil etc.) gets very hot after just a short ride. I put a meter on the
Battery with bike running and only got a couple hundreths of a volt increase when reving engine. With lights on they are bright and stay the
same when reving (no dimming- no brighter) I have a 12V 2 brush Gen.
I put in a new batt. and it seems just O.K. Will charge on a trickle to about
12.7 volts and hold there. I did recently disconnect my batt. Should Gen.
be polarized again? I would like the procedure for checking my Gen.
and Volt. Reg. with my DMM Meter. Just want to be sure before doing
anything else.

Thank's Bonham3 Ron L. Mass.

Sorry I went to ohio to bury my mother in law , been gone a week . What type of voltage regulater do you have ? ( electronic or stock point type ie. Delco ect. ) The electronic reg should not need repolerizing but the stock type will when batt. disconnected. As far as checking the Gen out put , your manual will have a good discription of the proceedure and I don't have mine with me but will look it up tonight , don't trust my old mind memory any more . Its nice to look things up any way.

Hello

Sorry to hear about your loss.
Thank's for the reply. I have an electronic type Reg.
Will wait for your reply on how to test that and or
the Gen. Will the Gen. have to be flashed ? and if so before
or after the tests. Also, If it has to be flashed do i remove both
Reg. wires from the A and F terminals before doing so?
I have no manuals for my bike at all.

Thank's again

Check to insure that your regulator is grounded, wired correctly

You really need to get a tech manual to do any of the tests you need . It would be too lenghy to type it all in this format , besides you will need a tech manual just for referance to do the tests . You can take your Gen. & Reg. off and take it to be tested on a bench testing shop ,some where that tests altenators and the like. They bring them up to speed and take readings to see if its up to par.If you don't have anything in your area , it can be sent out. If you had a manual we could walk you through it and it takes some special equipment to do them . Its been a while since I tested one , but I have all the stuff to do it and I will test mine after I start her up later this year. As far as a manual,Clymers for panheads 48-65 is a good start. You can order it from JP cycles or others . I'm not brushing you off , you need a tech manual for a lot of reasons And I know thats not what you want to here.

I had ALL the same problems with my 48 that bonham3 is having...back firing...gen/reg problems etc...don't worry about the back firing mine has been doing for 20 years and I still run 80...use star washers when you mount the volt reg to your frame you're not grounding...you're whole problem!
