Halogens, meaning plural?? Two headlamps would definitely be over the line. One 12v halogen headlamp and a halogen taillamp puts it right on the line.

Armatures get hot when overdrawn. This could be from excessive lighting, or a bad battery, or even resistances in the system.

Otherwise, I have known folks to comfortably run a halogen headlamp with a 6v 2-brush system.

You've got a lot of variables to consider. I'm electronically-challenged, but everything from ambient air temperature to the quality of the brushes can be involved, and the effects are additive. How many splices in your harness? Is your system fused, or have a modern breaker? Is your halogen of normal wattage, or one of the "off-road only" bulbs?

Etc., etc.

If all other things are in order, I would suspect your regulator.

I run a halogen 12v with 32e converted to12v just fine, also can run on low beam and run the spot lights for a while about half the time. Gen and battary seem to do fine. I like to keep checking the bat with digital volt meter to see what it is at when ride is done. Sounds to me like the regulator on your bike maybe alowing the gen to work to hard.
